Airbrushing Landscapes

Airbrushing Landscapes

During my 21 years teaching art and crafts in secondary schools in Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria, I have constantly heard discussion Hot on what constitutes art and what was craft. Questions fly: is painting art? It's really art craft? The answer often depends on what means the sophist was using, to express their own creativity.

I made this distinction: art is when you build an image, idea, concept or design using their creative skills and the boats is the way you choose to express your creativity with the design. Crafts include multi-media painting, sculpture, pottery, weaving, photography, etc.

Those who believe that art should only come from a soul deep and it just exploded, using what is at hand to create it, may have trouble with my definition.

Another question I regularly make creativity be taught? My answer is yes. Of course there are people more skilled than others and some have more natural abilities than others. But basically, creativity can be taught.

My experience is that teaching is more structured, the greater the ability to be creative. I do not believe that simply has to be expressed, as and when desired. Those who are willing to build on basic skills such as observations, drawing, color and tone will be faster to reach a creative solution to a problem.

And that brings me to another point. If you have a problem to solve, not only more likely to be creative, but it can wait more satisfaction from their efforts. So how do you find a problem when all you want to do is paint a picture? Van Gogh certainly had a problem I wanted to solve. I wanted to capture the aggressive movement of light and color in an ever changing landscape of wind and rain and dust. He did not come simply to paint a landscape, I wanted to solve a problem.

I think this is the biggest dilemma of teaching art in schools. Teachers try to teach a skill, such as ceramics printing or silk, but the results are usually more successful because students were not given a problem to solve.

Let me give you an idea of what I mean. I wanted to teach a class to use air brush to create a strong image design in a large canvas. Were not told what the medium was be. First, I collected a large number of balls and had the students draw the groups of balls 4 hours (over two weeks). This was his research. I specifically made aware of the development of negative space (background) and positive space (the actual balls).

Once the research I I gave the problem to be solved. We had to create a design with only two colors that highlighted the negative space. The best designs come from students who started to treat both the positive aspects (space balls) and negative space (background) as abstract shapes. Using a light box, which has more and more forms simplified to a truly beautiful and creative balance of the two colors is achieved. The final work was the boat, the airbrush technique on the tape.

Therefore, it is craft art? Well, I do not believe, as I see a lot of good art, real art without conscience. But I think you will be successful and worthwhile cause work that needs to marry art and crafts a sensitive and insightful final product of your artwork.
