What kind of adhesive is best for mosaics? It depends on your source material, method of mosaic, if you are working on a table horizontally or vertically on a wall, whether your mosaic is exposed to moisture, and the preference staff.

Many websites and articles say Weldbond is the best adhesive for indoor mosaics and that is the preferred glue of professional artists from around the world mosaic. I'm the kind of person who likes to ask, "Why?" I am forced to dig deeper, so my question is: What makes Weldbond much better than other polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glues (commonly known as white glue), such as Elmer's Glue All? If you're like me, you wonder, "Why are websites that say so Weldbond mosaic is the best mosaic glue, but none fully explain what makes it better or which is better? "I do not know, maybe a mosaic artist heard something about Weldbond and regurgitated another artist without knowing the facts of chemistry. Perhaps a supply salesman Mosaic has a greater profit selling a 4-ounce Weldbond of $ 4.50 a bottle of 7.5 oz Elmer's for only $ 1.50.

Let's think it. White tails are made of PVA emulsions. All PVA-based emulsions have the same properties: water based, odorless, easy to clean, colorless, relatively nontoxic, water resistant (not waterproof) and not very resistant to heat compared to other adhesives.

PVA glues varieties can be developed by adding small quantities of materials to enhance specific characteristics. For example, simple clay can improve high temperature strength glue. However, the differences in the varieties that are not major, because if you add too much additional material, the adhesion properties of the glue is unacceptably weak.

I tried to determine the chemical properties and Weldbond Elmer's, but could find nothing that completely define the ingredients. The Elmer's website says that their ingredients are proprietary, so I guess Weldbond ingredients are also owners. It could not find the results Independent laboratory tests that define the Weldbond shear strength, bond strength, cohesion and strength. (The key word is "independent".) Same for Elmer. Therefore could not compare the two to determine if it really is stronger than the other in court, adhesion and cohesion strength.

For our indoor mosaic applications, we really do not care whether a brand is stronger than the other by a ga-Pascal trillion? (A Pascal is a unit of pressure equivalent to one newton per square meter.) I do not think so. For example, do we care that a brand can support the weight of two elephants, while the other brand can support only one? Of course not. All that matters is whether the glue can effectively contain a small piece of Tessera glass that weighs less than an ounce of our source material without extremes external forces acting on it (for example, forces such as walking on it or hitting with a hammer). Thus, in terms of strength, how can we Weldbond choose whether to use Elmer's for our simple, light, indoor, application of mosaic art? The answer is easy - to perform our experiment scientist himself.
