If you're an oil painter or do embroidery, then you know you have to stretch the canvas to frame it, to completely smooth and tighten the canvas surface. The way is through the use of a gurney or stretcher framer using filter bar. With these components properly, you can get a good, tension taut canvas, while protecting the fabric surface.
stretcher strips are made of wood known as filter values, and provide a framework on which the canvas is set and stretched and attached. The fabric is typically attached to the stretcher strips with tacks or a staple gun to hold the canvas securely in place. A stretcher frame looks a lot like
a picture frame that is rectangular in shape. The corners of this framework can be combined in various ways. They consist of a tab, or the butt of a joint or interlocking corners. Corner joints necessary to allow some movement on the canvas, and therefore the corner joints are by stretchers, usually not enclosed. Like the wooden frames, which swell and compress depending on the amount of moisture to which they are exposed, so does the stretcher strips must be able to expand and contract slightly so that the fabric surface is not damaged, and that the canvas can restretched at a later date if desired. The hardening is often produced using a tool with stretchers called a special key setting, which is used in a special area of the corner to pull the canvas. Some authors use triangular wedges, after the fabric has been stretched over the frame, are inserted to give the final amount of adjustment to the surface of the canvas. Another method used to stretch the canvas before mounting in a frame is used filter bar. The filter bar is built in a fixed manner, so that adjustments can not be done.
The filter is attached to another filter with staples, nails and wood glue. A stretcher made of filter can also use the bar corner devices made of wood. You may not use a wrench to tighten with a stretcher made of a filter bar for each side. It is worth ensuring that the filter of stock used in the manufacture of stretcher bars to the task. File filtering high quality should not rot. Good stock strainer must also have some skill natural to resist deformation, exposure to all of which could damage the fabric facing it. Keeping these ideas in mind will help protect your canvas through the stretching step of processing.
