I have a question about cross. Please help.?

I just bought a tablecloth cross stitch pattern. It's been a long time since I've done cross-stitch, so I have a question. The kit calls for me to use four threads of silk. When I start, I make a knot in the back so it does not pull through, or I make a long tail on the back and just weave through a few of the X. What is the best way? I say that weave the thread ... If you make a knot ... see balls on the cloth when placed flat on the table.
